「桜楽苑(さくらえん)」
三菱マテリアル直島製錬所の福利施設には直島で最も古い桜がある。正確な樹齢は分からないが、30年前にはすでに現在のような巨木の姿をしていたと関係者は語る。
もともとこのスペースには弓道場があったが、H24年3月に竣工したVIP宿泊棟の建設に伴い、6本の桜の古木と梅1本を残して全て整地された。
深山を思わせる風情の東の山から西に広がる瀬戸内の空を一本の水流で繋げる、滝から園地へ。1800平米の敷地を起伏感のあるそれでいてスッキリ見通しの良い空間に仕立てるために、作庭の概念より抽象絵画のような表情に重きを置いて、円弧と自由曲線の集積による立体的な解釈を行い、厳選された石と最低限の植栽で切り詰めた表現を心がけた。

In the site, there is a big cherry tree that is believed to be the oldest in Naoshima. Though without knowing exactly how old it is, people say it’s been already in the actual size, which is quite huge,since 30 years ago.
Following the construction of a guesthouse for VIP on March 2012, the site was fully readjusted, removing the archery hall and leaving only six old cherry trees and one plum tree.
From the waterfall to the garden, a current of water connects deep-looking tasteful mountain in the east to the sky spreading toward the west over the Setouchi interior ocean. We wanted to arrange 1,800 square meters land into a well-arranged space with both ups and downs and an opened view. Displaying selected stones and the minimum quantity of plants, and aiming to give the garden an expression like an abstract painting rather than putting it in the limited notion of garden making, we intended to realize a very simple space composing the space with arcs and free curves.
